Not Sure Which Service Fits?

Our cold chain specialists will assess your requirements and recommend the perfect solution — no obligation.

A chiller van holds 0°C to +5°C for fresh produce, dairy and prepared food. A freezer van holds -18°C to -25°C for ice cream, seafood and frozen meat. A pharma van holds a validated +2°C to +8°C. Choose by the temperature your cargo must never leave, then by payload.

Chiller vs Freezer: The Decision in Practice

The tempting mistake is to rent a freezer van "to be safe" because it goes colder. In practice a deep-freeze unit is the wrong tool for chilled cargo: it costs more per day, burns more fuel, and running it near its warm limit is less stable than running a chiller in the middle of its band. Fresh produce and dairy held too cold suffer chill injury and texture damage as surely as they suffer from being too warm.

The reverse mistake is more expensive. A chiller van pushed to its lowest setting cannot hold -18°C, and frozen cargo that partially thaws and refreezes is unsellable even if it arrives hard. If any part of your load is genuinely frozen, you need a freezer unit or a multi-zone truck — not a chiller with an optimistic setpoint.

  • Chilled cargo — produce, dairy, bakery, prepared meals, flowers
  • Frozen cargo — ice cream, seafood, frozen meat, frozen bakery
  • Pharma — vaccines, insulin, temperature-sensitive medicines
  • Mixed loads — multi-zone truck, not a compromise setpoint
  • Never use a chiller as a substitute freezer
  • Never chill produce below its safe band

Where Pharma Transport Differs From Both

A pharma van is not simply a chiller with a tighter dial. GDP practice requires the temperature distribution inside the compartment to be mapped, the setpoint validated against that mapping, and the record retained as audit evidence rather than as reassurance. The tolerance is narrow — +2°C to +8°C — and an excursion of minutes can require a quarantine decision on the load.

That is why pharmaceutical loads travel in a dedicated vehicle class with smaller payload and a higher rate than a chiller of similar size. The premium buys documentation and validation, not extra cooling capacity. If your cargo is medicine, a food-grade chiller van is not an acceptable substitute regardless of the temperature it displays.

Cost, Size and Duty-Cycle Trade-Offs

For the same payload, expect a freezer van to cost roughly twice a chiller van per day, and a pharma van to sit alongside the freezer despite carrying less. Upsizing within a class is comparatively cheap — the step from a 1-ton to a 1.5-ton chiller is small — so where you are unsure of volume, upsizing within the correct temperature class costs far less than switching class.

Duty cycle then decides the final shape. High-frequency multi-drop routes want fast pull-down, side access and strip curtains; low-frequency bulk runs want payload and a tail-lift. Inter-emirate work rewards headroom in the refrigeration unit, because a marginally specified van that copes in Dubai will struggle on a summer afternoon crossing the Hajar mountains toward Fujairah.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a chiller van and a freezer van?

A chiller van holds 0°C to +5°C for fresh cargo like produce, dairy and prepared meals. A freezer van holds -18°C to -25°C for ice cream, seafood and frozen meat. They are different refrigeration units, not different settings on the same vehicle.

Can a chiller van be used to carry frozen goods?

No. A chiller van cannot reach or hold -18°C, and frozen cargo that partially thaws and refreezes is unsellable even if it arrives solid. Frozen loads need a freezer van or a multi-zone truck.

Is a freezer van more expensive to rent?

Yes, typically around double a chiller van of similar payload — AED 799 versus AED 399 per day. The deep-freeze unit works harder, uses more fuel and carries a higher maintenance cost.

Why can I not carry medicines in a food chiller van?

GDP requires mapped temperature distribution, a validated setpoint and retained audit evidence. A food-grade chiller van meets HACCP but is not validated to that standard, so the load would fail a pharmaceutical audit regardless of the temperature shown.

Can one vehicle carry frozen and chilled cargo at the same time?

Yes, on the multi-zone 5-ton and 7-ton trucks. They run separate compartments at independent setpoints, so a -20°C frozen load and a +5°C chilled load travel together without compromising either.

Which vehicle do restaurants usually rent?

Most restaurants and cloud kitchens run a 1-ton or 1.5-ton chiller van. The deciding factor is usually access and turning room on multi-drop urban routes rather than payload, which is why smaller vans often outperform trucks over a working day.
