What happens between the signup form and your screen
When you generate an address, the provider registers it against a domain whose MX records point at its own mail servers. A service that sends to that address performs an ordinary SMTP delivery - the same handshake it would use for any mailbox - so anything that can send email can reach a temporary inbox.
The message is accepted, parsed, encrypted and stored against your session. The browser polls for new mail, which is why messages usually appear within a few seconds of being sent. Nothing is forwarded anywhere, which is the key structural difference from an alias.
Receive-only, and why that matters
Temporary inboxes accept mail but do not send it. That is deliberate: an anonymous outbound service would be abused for spam within hours and its domains would be blocklisted, breaking delivery for everyone using it to receive legitimate confirmations.
In practice this only limits you if a flow requires you to reply by email rather than click a link. Confirmation links, verification codes, receipts and notifications all work normally.
Working within the expiry window
Two clocks run at once: the sender's confirmation link, which often expires in fifteen minutes to a day, and the inbox retention window. Whichever is shorter governs, so finish signups in one sitting rather than returning tomorrow.
Before you leave, copy out anything with lasting value - licence keys, order references, recovery codes. And if the account turned out to be worth keeping, change its email to a durable address while you still have access to the temporary inbox to confirm the change.
