What makes a temporary email service secure?

The threats that actually apply

There are three realistic risks with a disposable inbox, and encryption only addresses one of them. The first is interception, which TLS handles. The second is someone else opening your inbox, which depends on how addresses are generated and whether sessions are isolated. The third is retention - anything still stored is still exposed if the provider is compromised.

Public temp mail sites that publish a fixed list of shared inboxes fail the second test by design: the address is the only secret and it is printed on the homepage. A per-session random address is a much stronger position, because guessing it is impractical rather than merely discouraged.

Scheduled deletion is the control people undervalue. A provider that keeps nothing after 48 hours has a much smaller blast radius than one that keeps everything indefinitely, no matter how good its encryption is.

How Temp Postal is set up

Inbound mail arrives over TLS and is stored encrypted with AES-256 in US infrastructure. Each visitor's inbox is generated per session rather than drawn from a public pool, so there is no shared address to stumble into, and messages are purged automatically after their retention window rather than lingering until someone runs a cleanup job.

There is no account required for the free inbox, which is itself a privacy property: the service cannot tie your disposable mail to a profile it does not hold. Paid plans add custom domains, which move your traffic off shared disposable domains that many signup forms reject.

What it is still not appropriate for

Do not route bank one-time codes, tax documents, medical correspondence or password resets for valuable accounts through any disposable inbox, however well encrypted. The issue is not the cryptography - it is that the mailbox is designed to be short-lived and low-friction, which is the opposite of what a credential channel needs.

For those flows, use a durable mailbox with two-factor authentication. Keep disposable inboxes for the traffic that has no recovery value: trials, download gates, one-off forums, competitor research, and automated testing.
